Welcome to the HCG Diet Protocol, originally studied and theorized by ATW Simeons, MD. This is not a diet to be entered in to lightly. Please read through all of the literature carefully and thoroughly. You need to make sure that you are committing mind and body to make the best decision of your life! This protocol will change your life, if strictly followed. With the combination of HCG injections given at the clinic and the 500 calorie diet followed at home, one can usually expect to lose about .5 – 1 pound per day when following the guidelines, although men usually lose more weight than women.

Before starting the HCG Diet Protocol, we will establish health history, medical conditions, current medications, vitals and possibly a blood lab test for liver/kidney function and CBC profile if needed based on history. We will then weigh you and take all applicable measurements before administering the first shot of HCG. The shots are then given daily, with weigh-in, but skipping a shot on Sundays. Measurements will be taken every 2 weeks in the office.

HCG, or human chorionic gonadotropin is a hormone that is produced by the placenta during pregnancy. It is safe to be given to both men and women in controlled doses for the purpose of the diet protocol without affecting their sex organs or sexual function. We are using HCG for the purpose of stimulating the diencephalon in the brain to change our metabolism.

The HCG Diet Protocol is either a 26 or 43 day protocol, each consisting of 4 phases. The 26 day protocol is done if a person has 15 or less pounds they want to lose to achieve their ideal weight. The 43 day protocol is done if a person has more than 15 pounds to lose. We allow a person to lose no more than 35 pounds per 43 day cycle. After the first protocol or round is completed, a Phase 3 diet will be followed for 3 weeks then a Phase 4 diet for 3 weeks. There is a total of 6 weeks between Round 1 and Round 2 of HCG injections. No injections are given in Phase 3 and Phase 4

PHASE 1: Days 1-3, Load Days

Eat, Eat, Eat and Injections. Eat till you can’t anymore, and then eat some more! You want to fill up on good fats… cheeses, cream dairy, avocados, nuts, ice cream, meat, nut butters, olives, olive oil, etc. You can also eat decadent desserts and get your sweet tooth sick of sugar! You will probably gain some weight during these days, but these consumption days are very important to your comfort and success for the low calorie portion of Phase 2 diet. You need to build up your normal fat supplies so that you will have an easier time with Phase 2.

PHASE 2: Day 4-26 or Day 4-43, VLCD Very Low Calorie Diet

This is the start of the VLCD, a 500 calorie diet that has very strict guidelines printed for you on the following page. You will continue to get your daily shots until day 23 or day 40, skipping Sundays. You will need to follow all of the diet guidelines carefully. You will also need to weigh all of your food and calculate all calories consumed so that you do not go over 500 calories per day. It is also important that you drink at least 2 liters water, tea or coffee per day and should keep most of your tea and coffee intake to decaffeinated.

PHASE 3: 1200-1500 Calories, NO STARCH OR SUGAR

For 3 weeks, you will continue to eat no starches or sugars, although you can increase your fats and total calories. This is also a good time to start an exercise program.

PHASE 4: Calorie intake determined by BMR

During this phase, you will begin to slowly add whole grain starches. This will be maintenance for you, either forever or until your next round of injections. There are some good recipe sites on the Internet for Phase 3 & 4 that will be listed in the “helpful hints’ portion of the packet. Continue with an exercise plan you will stick to and make it part of your life. Muscle burns more calories and this will allow you to take in more calories to maintain your goal weight.

**** It is important to note that during P3 and P4 of the diet, you are weighing yourself everyday, same time each morning. You want to maintain your weight within 2 pounds of your ending weight of P2. If you gain more than 2 pounds, you will want to do (1) an apple day or (2) a steak day, both of which will be discussed later.

HCG Diet Theory

Here, I will try to condense and outline the theory behind the protocol, but I urge you to read Dr. Simeons original manuscript.

Obesity is the development of stored abnormal fat. There are 3 kind of fat in the human body. The first two are normal fats and are needed in the body. They are structural fat, that cushions the organs and normal fuel fat, which can be called upon to burn nutritionally if the body does not intake enough calories. The third type of fat, the abnormal fat, gets locked away and is very hard to burn for nutritional value. This is why the overweight patient can diet, or even starve themselves and only burn up the normal types of fat that the body needs. The body loses its ability to access the abnormal fat for nutritional needs.

It is theorized that the diencephalon, part of the central nervous system that controls most automatic functions in the body, controls the storing and utilization of fat fuels in the body. HCG, in combination with the VLCD of 500 calories has an effect on the diencephalon, telling it to release the stored fat bank to be used for nutritional uses or burned for energy. This is important when trying to understand why a person can continue the VLCD without fatigue and extreme hunger. The body is burning stored fat to achieve the extra calories needed for normal everyday functions. The VLCD is very important for this function to happen. If the diencephalon gets messages that there is sufficient caloric intake from the diet, it will not trigger the release of the abnormal fat stores, even under the influence of HCG.

It is also important to understand that the injection portion of the HCG protocol is only the beginning of a change in your “eating lifestyle” to maintain your results. One cannot go back to their bad eating habits after a round of HCG without gaining back the lost weight. Please take this opportunity to really change your habits to become healthier about your food choices and portion sizes.

THE DIET

Breakfast:

Herbal tea in any quantity without sugar. Black tea and coffee are also permitted. You may sweeten with stevia, a natural sweetener available at health food stores. DO NOT USE aspartame, Nutrisweet, acesulfame, sucralose, Splenda or any other chemicalized sugars. Diabetics may eat 1 protein item each morning to control blood sugar.

Lunch and Dinner:

ANY MEAT IS 1 ITEM: 3 1/2 ounces of beef, veal, chicken breast, fresh white fish, lobster, crab or shrimp. Make sure that the meat is very lean with no fat. All visible fat must be removed before cooking. All meat must be weighed uncooked. A food scale will assist in getting weight correct. The meats can be cooked by broiling, grilling or boiling with no additional fats or oils. A George Foreman grill works great. White albacore tuna packed in water may also be used.
Fruits & Vegetables: Use from the following lists. No more than two vegetables and no more than one fruit with each meal.
FRUITS = 1 item:
One apple (not 2 small apples), one orange, handful of strawberries, 1/2 grapefruit, 1/2 fresh peach, 2 plums (regular size), 1/2 cup cherries, 1/2 cup dries apricots
VEGETABLES x 2= 1 item:
broccoli, celery, fennel, cabbage, cucumbers, green/red peppers, spinach, green beans, cauliflower, 1/2 cup radishes, 1/2 cup zucchini, 1/2 cup mushrooms, onions/garlic, lettuce, chard, asparagus, 1/2 cup eggplant, tomatoes

Starches = 1 item:

Substitutions:
3/4 cup non-fat unflavored yogurt sweetened with stevia may be eaten in place of one of the fruit or vegetables once per day. You may use 3 eggs ( 1 whole plus 2 egg whites) or 1/2 cup fat free cottage cheese occasionally as your protein.

Seasonings: You may use the juice of 1 lemon or lime per meal. Salt, pepper, vinegar, mustard powder, sweet basil, parsley, thyme, marjoram, and most other herbs and spices are fine to use. DO NOT USE oil, butter, or dressings of any kind!

*** 8 items may be eaten per day in 2 meals (1 of each: protein, veggie, fruit, starch) or spread out through out the day. BUT, 2 of the same items (i.e., 2 fruits, 2 proteins) cannot be eaten together at the same time.
